Magnesium Special Parts general info

I know I said I like stock bikes, but I also like absolute performance, which leaves me twisted when it comes to what I like. PLUS I like Harleys, so performance and Harley are at odds with each other as well, not to mention that I don't like an absolutely stock Harley, I'd have to make some little changes.

ANYWAY, now you're all confused, let me just say if money were no option of course I'd get every gadget for every toy, so onto my questions:

I've heard magnesium alloy (don't know what type) is not good for road use, as it gets harder, and more brittle and after about a year is deemed unsafe. Is this true with MV's special parts? The wheels concern me in particular.

Not that I'm about to rip out and buy these things, *sigh* but I got turned off magnesium by 1) the price, and 2) the aging / brittleness. Surely MV wouldn't offer these parts if they were unsafe and / or will be unsafe and need throwing out in a year right?

Does anyone have any inside info on this? Of course any discussion on it is welcomed as well!

Cheers guys!

I personally LOVE the look, but the weight gains doesn't seem to be worth the price at all IMO. The Brutale Oro is only 5 lbs lighter than the S. And it has ALL the magnesium and carbon bits, swingarm, wheels, frame plates, triple clamp, etc....

All that extra money, for 5 lbs? You can spend 1/5 the money on a set of carbon wheels and save more than 5 lbs right there, and still not have spent nearly as much, and actually be able to definitly notice the weight difference(rolling inertia)...

I too have heard the thing about magnesium parts and brittleness over time...I'm thinkin maybe that's over a long course of time, like 10 years??? I dunno, intresting point though.

Surely there's gotta be more weight saving than that! I was reading on the MV Faq that the difference in weight between the aluminium MV wheels and the Magnesium ones is 10lbs alone! (25.55 to 15.5 combine weights)

i actually read that carbon wheels are actually the dangerous ones to buy. they eventually can attain hairline fractures/cracks that are invisible to the naked eye....i dont recall hearing that magnesium is brittle?

imo i'd be happy with either or

The Brutale Service manual lists the Oro at 179 kg (393 lbs) 185 kg (407 pounds)...sorry, forgot I was looking at KG, not lbs

Still not worth the dough IMO...

Yeh I could personally stand to lose 30lb myself, and save the AUD20k+ on carbon fibre and magnesium. But perhaps then I'd be TOO sexy. lol!
