Can anybody tell me what this approx 12 inch long metal strip is ?

Yes it is off an F4

and yes I do know what it is... : )

and I do think it is a good bit of design from an engineering aspect.

Looks like a Flux Capacitor bracket to me. Two needed for a snug but comfortable fit??

A primitive steering dampener.
One use only as it would be bent like a banana after a decent jolt which is why we now have a better more advanced version
