I've been contacted by a local bike shop and they have asked for assistance with an issue that's come about on a 2000 model F4 750.
The story goes that the bike has a Datatool alarm installed. The owner put the alarm into "Service mode" so the bike could be wheeled around the shop without the alarm triggering. He may have done this without the key in the ignition, as the manual states that the bike ignition should be turned on so ha may have been in error doing that.
The only thing that's been done to the bike while in the shop is that the battery has been replaced with a new fully charged battery. Upon turning on the key the service technician observed the normal movement of the rev counter and all the instrument lights came on. He pushed the ignition button and nothing, nada, she no go.
I asked if the battery was installed correctly, and the technician confirmed that it was. These guys are not an MV Agusta dealer but I'm just looking for your assistance to help out where I can.
Any ideas as to where to go to next? They intend to remove / isolate the alarm from the loom and check the start up.

Hi Dave..If you go to Datatool.co.uk They have a diagnostics on that site. It would help if you knew the datatool alarm..ie is it Datatool red? They are a high quality alarm so should be sortable.
Datatool alarms have a small back up battery inside their unit, if the main ones disconnected it runs off its own internal source.
Sounds like the internal battery was pretty tired, probably due to the main one not charging or holding its charge properly and it simply didn't have enough juice to tide it over between swaps etc.
You have a couple of routes to choose from-
1. you can re align the the key fob with the alarm again, its quite a simple process, contact datatool direct and they will talk, you through it, however bare in mind the internal battery to the alarm is probably at deaths door so do you really want to risk being stranded somewhere miles from home one summers day when it decides to completely die thus having the same issue again.
2. Remove the alarm, its probably a Vito which were discontinued for this very reason, intermittent faults and poor internal battery, this costs you about £10-£15, if you ask your dealership im sure they will recommend an approved datatool agent and sort it for you. Mine took about 10 min's to remove the whole unit via an alarm specialist, 15. squid and he came to the door!!
I believe Datatool are good alarms in general, however the older Vito has chequered reliability, kind of like having Harold Shipman round to your Gran's for tea.... 50 /50 BoNkErS
I left the battery off my 888 Duc over the winter one time, and had the same problem. It was fitted with the Veto Evo. I found the solution here. Just download the specific user's guide you need and follow the advice. Worked for me!

I had the same symptons, phone Datatool who said it was not the alarm. My dealer was adamant it was the alarm - turned out that a fuel hose had come off inside the fuel tank!
I know this is simple and obvious but::
My 750 is fitted with a spyball but thats of no relevance. A couple of times it has stood for a long time so the alarm goes to sleep (which is something Datatools do as well) anyhow wake it up and then when it comes to start nothing rev counter sweeps etc but if i flick the stand up and pull the clutch in it will start. After that first start its ok

Was this from a shop in palmerston north in new zealand? This is the bike I just bought.
They eventually just removed the alarm and gave it to me sepperatly. Is it possible to have this small battery replaced or should I just replace the alarm??

Considering the replies above in regards to that brand/model being slightly unreliable, i would look at another one.
Or just dont leave your MV anywhere untended! I have a very large cable that goes thru the bike and round a big poll in the garage, then a disk lock alarm on the bike itself. Then i just take the disk lock alarm with me when traveling.
In the end, someone is not going to ride off with your bike if you have this sort of protection, they will put it on the back of a ute/truck/trailer etc and nab off with it that way - and an internal alarm is not going to protect you from this issue either.
Another thing get them to check the battery again, There are 2 wires on the earth side and often when they are disconnected one of them drops down out of site. if they are not used to MV's they could easily have missed it and only connected one, It has the effect described as well

The latest is that the technician removed the alarm and the bike started right up. It seems that the customer purchased the bike with the alarm installed and didn't use it often so he rode it away like that.
Yeah it works fine now, alarm is off sitting in a box. Maybe have another alarm fitted instead of this one. any one with advice on a semi decent one thats not gonna cost the earth but main thing, be reliable?
