VIN stamped on gas tank

I discovered the strangest thing on a 2008 Brutale; the VIN number scribed on the tank in several places. I came across a Brute during the day and as I was staring at the gas tank, I suddenly recognized a few scribed numbers. It was really difficult to see and it wasn't until I started moving that I was able to see the other numbers. There was no position where all of the numbers could be seen at the same time. The numbers matched the VIN of the bike. The VIN on the tank was not stamped, and it was clear that it was scribed by hand.

I looked on my 2009, and didn't see anything. Unfortunately, by the time I saw my bike it was dusk. The bike is in the garage now, but I don't see anything.

What gives?

Maybe an owner who has had a bike stolen wanted to be able to track the parts?

His bike was purchased brand new from the dealer in 2009.

Not a normal item...sounds like an anti-theft precaution. Where on the tank was this? There are some companies that sell anti-theft programs that put ID numbers on parts all over the bike to help track a stolen and parted out bike. But usually numbers can't be seen without taking stuff off.

I used to be fast....now I just dream about it.

More MVs, More VINs

As it turns out, I found my VIN number on my tank today (2009). In addition, there was an F4 (2008) in our group ride and I found it on his bike as well. It took some time to locate it, but once I did it was easy to point out. However, never would have found it without the sun light and clear sky (clear reflection).

It was kind of funny because Mike commented on how there must be something wrong with my bike to have the VIN on the tank. I waited for him to walk away from his bike and I started looking. As mentioned above, it is not easy to see and there are only a few angles where it shows up. Now I'm on a mission to see which other models have this.

Before any MV gets assembled they put all the parts of that particular bike on a trolley which follows the bike around on the assembly line.

Maybe it's the guy putting all these parts on this trolley that put the numbering on, just in case he goes for a coffee break (which they do a lot in Italy) and then forgets which bike he was trying to put together. I mean, an MV with 2 fuel tanks would look silly.

I'll try to get a pic this weekend. As I mentioned before, you can only see part of the number in a given location. You have to move along the tank to expose the rest of the numbers.
