Nicasil or not

Hi

Im just about to put the cylinder back on my F4 1000 S. Due to an engine failure I have replaced the piston on cyl. 3 with a new piston and rings. My intention was to Hone the cylinder first, but before I do that, I want to know if the cylinderwall on these bikes are Nicasil threated - If so it is perhaps not a good idea to Hone the cylinder or??

Yes.. Mahle Nikasil coated cylinders. If you hone it, you are deglazing it. Its a thin and hard surface. It could be done by some one with expertise. If it is not necessary dont do it. Never hone with diamond because of thickness. Who do it do with flex hone or scotchbrite lubricating with oil (to desglaze).

Thought it was a verboten as the abrasive in the hone will embed in the "soft" areas of the coating and cannot be removed.

because of the method of applying the coating, it is somewhat textured .....ie; rehoning probably isn't a good idea

I repeat, contact Mahle for the correct prep method, they've been doing this for for

almost 60 years......

what, you're going to do it better??????
