Question Checca 99 on eBay

This one arrived a few days ago and has slowly progressed to the current price. Looks as though it has non original rear shock nuts and footrests. Also, the position of the fuel taps at the rear of the tank are different to the three Checca 99's I am currently restoring. Does anyone know if the fuel tap location changed between 1963 models and 1964? Also it is painted as a Sport but has a GTE top triple clamp and handlebars. Engine runs a Sport carb. If anyone knows more about these models I would love to hear from you.

Thanks Dorian but we are in trouble if I am the supposed guru for Checca's. It appears that this machine was holding a reserve of between 4K and 5K USD and it has already surpassed this reserve. Another point is that the machine does not have the frame mounted pump and finding an original is an almost impossible feat as you know. Apart from all my criticisms though the restoration appears to be quite good in terms of the paint and chrome. Pity MV never did this very well when the bikes were new....................

Hi Brad,

I am restoring my second Checca 99 GTE-S.
The first in now in the museum with Gary Kohs, the
second is now almost finished.

As you have seen more of these bikes than I probably, can
you elaborate on the possible year of change of rearlights?

Your Checca's have the big round glass, both mine have the
rectangular glass, which is also seen on later MV 125/150
series.
cheers

Hi Gerard,
I have the better part of three Checca 99's. A 1963 GTE and Sport, and a 1964 Sport. All have the round taillight and I believe that 1965 was the last year of production. The parts manual for these macines shows only the round CEV taillight on both models. From what I know you could suspect that 1965 model Checca's may have had the square taillight? Have you seen others in Europe with the square rear light? All the models I have seen or owned are from Malaysia, which is where they were dumped when the Americans did not buy them I believe. They have all have the round CEV setup on the rear. Sorry I cannot be of more help. Let me know if you want a copy of the parts manual,

Hi Gerard,
Best bet is to check the casting date punched inside the magneto / chain cover. The casting date can be found on most major castings including the head and barrel. My November 1963 GTE has frame 583652 / Eng. 583754. My December 1963 Sport has frame 583773 / Eng. 583857. If your numbers are after mine then I think we can safely assume that your bike was cast in 1964 or 1965. I do not think that even Dorian has any knowledge of the production numbers and years for these machines unfortunately. I have never seen one with an angular tail lamp. Are all your electrics CEV? Best, Brad.

Hi Brad,

I will be looking for these stamped data. I remember that inside, while restoring the internals of the engin, I saw a 1963 date.
Frame/engin number will follow.
My first Checca, which is now in the collection with Gary Kohs, USA
is presented on registry on www.thebikemuseum.com the very first bike off which a photo is displayed, had numbers: frame: 583753, and engin: 583801.
I come back to this soon

Hi Gerard, I know your bike . I have downloaded that photograph as one of my references for the 3 bikes I have. Maybe the Bike Museum should revise the specifications though? 4 cyl? DOHC? 5 speed? They describe a Checca as though Ago raced one! The numbers that you supplied are between my two 63 models, so I would assume that your Checca in the Bike Museum is a 63 model also? My third machine is not complete and needs a set mudguards and a seat. Any information you could share with me on where I might find these parts would be greatly appreciated. Can you send a picture of your square tail lamp also,

Best,

Steelsie
