Valve clearances and synthetic 20W/50

Hi chaps

I pulled the bodywork off my bike a couple of days ago to remove the clutch cable, and whilst I was down there I decided to do a valve clearance check.

Shortly before I bought the bike it was serviced by Dave Kay, and he reshimmed the gaps. The bike had been running on 20W/50 mineral oil. These were the numbers he found on commencement. As you can see, they're all over the place.

INLET EXHAUST
.0055" .009"
.007" .008"
.0035" .008"
.007" .011"

Dave Kay set the valves to spec.~ .011"/.012".

I've owned the bike for four years or so, and in my ownership I've run it on Amsoil 20W/50 fully synthetic.

These are the measurements I found on checking them yesterday:

INLET EXHAUST
.010" .010"
.009" .0115"
.010" .011"
.010" .0115"

Testament not only to Dave Kay having done a good job in the first place, but more especially to the oil! Finding only .001" average wear/variation in approx. 10,000km of use is pretty amazing. At 65/gallon (UK) the Amsoil is expensive stuff indeed, but I'll be servicing the bike in the next few weeks, and you can bet which oil I'll be using .

..on another note:

My bike stands sometimes for long periods between start-ups, so I'm in the habit of placing it on its mainstand, selecting a high gear and turning the rear wheel (and thus the engine) by hand in order to maybe put some oil on the cams before pressing the starter button. I've never been sure if this was in any way helping though.

Yesterday I did this with the cam covers removed, and was amazed to see the amount of oil which oozed from the small holes in the side of the cam lobes before the rear wheel had even turned a quarter turn. Wahey! Positive proof that my efforts have not been in vain!

The big benefit of fully synthetic oil is that it stays on the moving parts for long periods. Therefore wear on start up, which is when most wear takes place, is reduced to a minimum.

Absolutely phenominal bike!

Thank you very much sor sharing pics and oil information.

Don't know what took me so long but in 2010 I made a promise to myself to never run conventional oil in anything, ever again.

When I first switched to this fully synthetic I was astounded at the difference it made in the feel of the bike. Gearchange was immediately improved, and the engine response much sharper. What's more, for the first time since I'd bought the bike it would actually idle without dying!

This is the first time I've had the cam covers off though, so it was interesting to see how the cams looked for wear. It's certainly done the job, so I won't be going back to mineral oil either. It's just a pity that I've got to order on-line and get the stuff delivered to my door. It would be easier if I could just pop to the local auto store and pick up a gallon!
