175 Squalo 5v

Hi,

Ive got a Squalo 175 5v race bike project and i would like to buy some valves, valve springs, a bigend, bearings, camchain and a few other bits to allow me to start the engine rebuild.

Can anyone tell me where these bits can be bought please?

All the best,

Ed

Welcome, Ed.

Hi Ed,
Normally you'd start with the MV Club UK, but I understand they are in "difficulty" and not sending anything out.

valves - sorry can't help
valve springs - I don't think they are available, so you'll probably need them making as specials
bigend - go to a good machine shop and they'll press it apart to inspect. Hopefully the conrod will be OK, and then it's just a case of fitting a standard caged roller bearing and maybe having a new crank pin made.
bearings - are all standard sizes so readily available
cam chain - needs to be pre stretched and good quality. I used Andy the Chainman who supplied me an IWIS chain. Email [email protected]

My CS engine is similar to yours (I think) and I rebuilt it earlier this year, so if you have any questions, please ask. A friend fully rebuilt a Squalo a few years ago and he may be able to help if you are stuck.

Ed-
My measurements matched 06B chain- sometime catalogs call it BS-06B, but I think the BS is just British Standard. The OEM chain has flat side plates, not the more common figure8 plates.
The chain isn't hard to find, but the best practice is to replace the chain and sprockets at the same time, and the finding sprockets will be more of a challenge. The upper sprocket has the vernier holes bored into it, and the lower sprocket is one piece with it's shaft. Drilling the vernier holes won't be hard for a machinist, but you'll probably end up buying a lower sprocket and keying it to a new shaft- again, not too difficult for a machinist, but not as easy as getting the OEM parts.
My experience is with CS engines, but I have some Squalo parts, so I've assumed the cam drive parts are the same- can't be certain though.
Parts for MV 175s are almost impossible to find- even if you found some used valve springs on Ebay you need to wonder why they were removed- probably worn out. If you have the original valves you can modify an available valve to match- you probably get my point that you'd better make friends with a machinist.
I've never seen a 5 speed transmission- would like to see photos when you get it torn apart. And, I have some drawings of engine parts- send me a private message and we can exchange email addresses if you're interested.

Here you can see some squaloparts

A think it is possible to use primary chains from Saab 99/900 to a camchain
In each primary house there is 3 chains ,

Kind regards Åke
