61(?) 125 Turismo Rapido...

A trusted friend and MV dealer brought this home from Italy:

Name: MV.JPG
Views: 351
Size: 94.5 KB

It does not smoke, it runs well, the gearbox is sound and it has the original registration and license plate from Italy.

I believe I have found my local classic.

I also think the price is good.

I am looking for comments from the Classics Folks. Please tell me what you think.

Hey Chucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the (proper) club, the classics will teach you much, about yourself mainly - you don't any hair to pull out so you've got a jump start into the programme

I just saw this and am at the office so don't have access to my archives or bibles but visually yes, that's looking like a 61/62 125 Turismo Rapido, amusingly you'll find out what it meant to be on a "rapid tourer" in those days I think you were dieting right? Well, this is an incentive, every 5lbs you drop should give you an extra 1mph.

Without seeing the thing in person, hearing it run, etc it's hard to give you an opinion. It certainly looks an honest machine with lovely patina (there's that word again) although I am not sure the rip in the seat will add to rider comfort. I know and you've been around mechanical things long enough to have an educated opinion about it - as long as you leave out the emotional factor you'll make the correct decision, but if you've got some $s burning a hole in your pocket, what else is life for?

If I can help in any way, please don't hesitate to holler - probably email is best as I am an infrequent visitor these days, due to time not anything else - I still do love you all!

Cheers and Congratulations ( if it is not premature).
Rob

My intention is to first collect the bike this weekend. There will be some cleanup, but no major restoration unless I find something really wrong. If that becomes the case, then I will do a full on concourse type restoration with the goal of "putting it right in the pool room"....actually it would be in the home theater room!

The seat I will probably have repaired by the good folks at Barber Museum (Thanks, ED!) If I could find a suitable seat pan, I would leave this one alone and have a new seat done up for the occasional ride.

@MVista: Man if I could add 10 MPH to the speed of this bike, I would be a happy man! (So would my cardiologist, my knee surgeon, my orthopaedic spine surgeon, my podiatrist....)

I collected the '61 MVA TRA 125 yesterday. The little MV starts on first kick and runs quietly. It does need some cosmetic clean-up, but as is it has a nice patina that I don't think I'll change.

There is a shop in California, USA that can reline the brakes and match them via machining to the drums and that is a necessity if anyone wants to stop while taking a tootle on this cool little bike.

The seat cover needs to be replaced and I am told The Barber Museum guys can do this with an original cover.

The things I need to find include: A headlight lens. I have the reflector and a NOS bezel, but I need to find the glass. Rumor also has it that there is a hooded bezel available. As mine is the plain bezel, I would like to find the hooded one if that is correct for the model and year. The other thing on the immediate find list is footpeg rubbers for the driver pegs. The right side rubber is half-missing and degrading.

Now for something that is probably more difficult: I think the cap for the back of the exhaust pipe has disintegrated. (If, indeed, there is supposed to be one.) f anyone knows a source for that, or a complete exhaust, I'd like to know.

The last thing on the need-to-find-quickly list would be a manual - if those existed. I know from reading here that manuals for some of these bikes are more like notes on paper that someone collected, but, if there is a manual, I'd like to have one.

I have the original purchase paperwork for the original owner. The bike was sold by a shop in Bologna. It has the original plate still on it.

Thanks in advance for helping out a Classic MV newbie!

Question At the risk of starting a "Tire Thread"...

The tires on this machine are mismatched front and back. Is there a source for period correct rubber?

Look at JC Whitney.....no, I'm serious !!

Barber museum may have the manual available to copy. They have a HUGE reference library. I'll get you a name to contact.
