Once upon a time in Canada

Been a lot of negativity on this forum recently..

Are we forgetting what this is all about?

Pic taken circa early seventies, somewhere 'north of the border'...

Not sure about the details surrounding that old photo but...

This photo was taken summer of 2005 somewhere east of Ontario. Look hard and you'll notice the same style tail section about fourth from the end up against the block wall. Bike was complete, low mileage and lookin' good at that time.

Looks like a Voxan behind the Ducati mono

And at the bottom, on the left, the orange bike isn't it a Laverda?

Yes Xavier, you are correct. The Voxan was sent for importation evaluation. However, either it didn’t pass or the market was not right at the time as they have never been brought into Canada. There were other rarities such as a pre production Ducati F1 750 (Montjuich if memory serves), OW01 Yamaha, Bimotas and others.
What you are not seeing in this photo were the dozens of crates with brand new NOS motorcycles and all the boxes of NOS parts just to the right of Voxan. All of which were over 15 years old at the time.

Photo was snapped by a family member in a top-notch tuner's shop filled with other equally mouth-watering machines... Not sure who lucky owner was and is...but sure would be interesting to know!

Thanks, Stephen, might be the same bike (judging by their scarcity...) I notice that you called it the Romanelli collection -- as in the designer and long-ago importer of Italian bikes to Montreal? If you don't mind my asking, what's the story behind your photo?

Yes, what you see in that photo were the remnants of Francesco’s motorcycle business and private collection. He has since sold all the parts. I suspect the bikes are gone as well as he has not returned my phone calls or emails. He had several that I wished I’d bought back then. I tried to contact him with ideas of buying at lest one but when I didn’t get any replies I put a deposit down on my F3.

The occasion of this photo was my wife’s first visit to start the long process to purchase her then brand new, still in the crate, 1987 Ducati 650 Indiana. (Photo of Linda's bike at the Indy Moto GP 2010)

He is a unique individual to say the least. He can be engaging and stand offish, enigmatic one minute and unequivocally open the next. He is the quintessential , “riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma”.
His mind never stops working. While walking and talking with him it was not uncommon to see him stop and jot down or sketch something on the nearest box or scrap of paper.

One such item stuck out to us. Printed in black marker on a ripped off box top flap and sitting prominently atop the NOS parts boxes was this Stalin quote; “Ideas are more powerful than guns. We would not let our enemies have guns, why should we let them have ideas?”

If anyone is interested in learning more about Frank the Knee Slider did a bit on him awhile back.

Stephen, I enjoyed your backstory and link; in a way, I hope Mr. Romanelli opted to hold on to his unique collection, rather than sell it off piecemeal.

And compliments to your wife for her rare Indiana... Nicest example I've ever seen...

Peter, there is a whole lot more to Franks story as well as Linda’s Indiana. You would not believe what happened after that photo of Dino (Linda’s name for her Indiana) was taken at the Indy Moto GP but we’re getting off topic.
I’ll see if I can find the story she wrote about Dino and post it with photos in the “Other Marques 2 Wheeled” section.
