Tank capacity

Is my addition off here.
Manual says 19lt tank capacity. 4lt reserve fuel.
So is that 23lt tank capacity all up.
If so how come my bike stopped working when it ran out of gas, 55km used on reserve city riding. Luckily I was so close to gas station I free wheeled up to pump.
The fill up only took 21.16lt with my bike leaning on its stand.
So where is the missing litre plus.

Early bike or newer bike ? My 750 and 910 both have the same 19 litre tank (15+4), the later bikes have bigger 23 ltr tanks.

55 on reserve is doing quite well, mine runs out after 51.2 km ....

Thanks BillyRay, I had no idea what a evap canister was until now, thnx google, seems good that its there.
Maybe manufacturers should really say how much liquid can fill their tanks at a rideable level instead of the volume of the inside.
That was the first time I've emptied a tank I figured I had another 10ks before running out, going by its so called capacity. Luckily I was 30m from the station I was heading for when the engine died. Coasted right up to the pump. My lucky day.

Also with the bike on its side stand you cant fill the tank completely cause the filler is lower than the tanks highest point.
