New Owner of 750S! Electric Issue After Jumpstart!

Morning everyone! My name is Fred, I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota and just bought a 2005 Brutale 750S with 5,700 miles on the clock. I test drove the bike and it ran just fine, everything was working.

Three hours later the bike was stone dead. I figured it was a batter issue. So I used a car charger to try and give it some power. Here is what I did.

With the power off, I connected positive to positive and negative to ground. Nothing.

Then I connected the negative to the negative post on the battery. The guages and fan all went haywire and flickered and fluttered. I didn't keep it connected for more than just a second or two.

Well, yesterday I bought a new battery and hooked it up and now it doesn't run properly. Here is what it does:

- The fan won't turn off at all (even when the bike is totally off and the key is out and it's cold)
- The right side blinkers are on all the time (not blinking just on)
- The blinkers won't blink
- The bike won't stay running and will not go more than a block
- The fuel pump sounds like it's constantly on when I have the key on but the motor isn't running

Any thoughts on what happened here and what I can do?

Thank you so much! Looking forward to riding this thing!

Fred

Hi Fred - congrats on the new purchase but sorry to hear you've hit some issues.

I suspect you might have a fried SPU (see sticky at the top of this section and search on them) but others will be along with more experience of these character flaws.

Fred;
it sounds like you have 2 problems
the blue backed SPU is done.....all the electrical strangeness
the correct part number is at the top of the section thanks to Carl

fuel pump running on, is the line came off or its leaking

the lines in the tank are supposed to be replaced every 3 years

you will need 12" of 5/16"/8mm SUBMERSIBLE fuel line, spec SAE J-30R10
available at your local auto parts store
a fuel injection fuel filter, i use Wix #33012
you will need some Clic-R pliers;

Thank you all for your help!

I have some follow up questions -
  • Is the SPU the same as the ECU?
  • The SPU part number appears to be 8A00A9615, where could I purchase it? I can't find anyone in the country or on ebay selling them?
  • Would installing the SPU be a simple job? For example, do I just unscrew it and plug all the wires back in?
Thank you all so much!

Fred

No, the ECU is different and located under the tank on top of the air box.

The SPU is lower right on the frame (inside). See the sticky for further info on numbers and replacement suppliers:

Hi Fred,

The SPU is an easy replacement, The silver cover on the right under the tank needs removing, then it's just a case of switch them around.

I've just had mine replaced by MV, the mechanic is now an old hand at it after MV sent the wrong SPU 3 times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (at least it was free!)

Should have read the sticky lol

Thank you guys for all the input so far. I looked at the back of the SPU and it is indeed blue. I will be ordering a new one ASAP! I will update everyone to let them know if that solves the issues. I am hoping it will!

Hey guys! Got my SPU from Italy in just one week!

Installed it myself and all of the electrical issues have been resolved!

Cost of part was $600 shipped to my door.

Thanks again!
