For those of you who have experienced hard starting or no starting of your Brutale or MY10 F4....check to see if your battery is a Koyo.

Thanks to those who were at the BubIII and helped Cindy out by push starting her 1090RR when it wouldn't start electrically. It had been off a tender for all of two days...

When we got home, I put it back on the charger and we did some rides...then, it sat for two weeks off the charger...yes, not enough juice in reserve to start the bike...even with the charger on 80 amp start cycle!

The battery had essentially become a load.

Yesterday, after the bike had been on a good trickle charge for two days, it wouldn't start even at the 80 amp start setting. The bike could not be jump started electrically.

Solution: Walked over to my 312R, removed the Yuasa battery that is original equipment (2007...yes 4 years old), put it in the 1090RR...push-a-da-button...bingo. The1090 started right up.

That Yuasa has not been on a tender for two months.

New Yuasa on order for the 1090RR,a long with th efirst service at Eastern Cycle.

KOYO BATTERIES ARE A P.O.S. IMHO....

Chuck;
never heard of Koyo batteries.......they must be cheaper

search A123 batteries

i've never even owned a trickle charger until just recently
check the key off drain shouldn't be much

I've got a 4-5 year old Yuasa in mine...between 7-10 days is about its limit. Like Noel, no tender either, just wheel her out and have a nice slope down the road 2nd gear and she's away again.

Wink batteries and charging systems

any vehicle that needs a trickle charger has either a;
>screwed up charging system and or a
>drain on the battery with the key off

the original Yuasa in my Aprilia RSVR lasted over 7 years

even the one in the R1150GS did 6 years, admittedly it never cranked it over very fast
but it would still start it (but drive the ABS nuts from low voltage)

I'd agree mate, all my other bikes have never had an issue with batteries.

I do remember a passing comment made to me years ago...I was taking our an Italian Tractor for a test ride and they needed to jump it...he simply said, 'these italian bikes just don't like sitting around - they need to be ridden'

Whilst guys across the forum have had many problems and I certainly sympathise ...(IMO) ...my experience has been get out on your MV and ride it - the more you ride it, the less problems you get. Ride it, Service it, Enjoy it....and she loves you back

Hey Chuck, check out the Shorai lithium batteries, put one in my '05 R1, heaps of cranking power, never go flat, big size & weight saving. I have my PC111 & battery living in the battery box now. When my Brutale battery dies I'll be getting one for her too.

Hi Kids...yup, got the message...I am one of the messengers. A properly maintained quality battery with no drain on the system to which it is attached will, in fact, last a long time without trickle charging.

But, don't throw the baby out with the bathwater...the point of this thread was to inform all that KOYO makes a cheap product...and that is what MV Agusta is now putting in the bikes.

I have never had a battery problem before this...including my "T" shaped battery that Honda designed for the 1983 Shadow.

I am simply suggesting that, if you have a late model F4 or a Brutale that shows fully charged yet won't start...check the battery brand. If it is Koyo, simply get rid of it...the battery I mean...in fact you might want to do that before the cheap POS fails someplace that will be difficult on you.

OP: What were the symptoms of a non-start attempt...

Did the solenoid click under the seat on the 1090 at each attempt? Did the starter engage?

My Y10 F4 has the Koyo battery and is right now completely Dead, have always kept it on a Battery Tender but my dear wife had accidentally flicked the power off in the Garage while I was away on business for Two weeks.
Killed the POS Battery.
When I came home to start the bike, a Stop/ Fault / Can Line warning came up on the dash, and the fans came on.
I ordered a Shorai from MotoWheels last week, with their Shorai Battery Charger/Management unit.
Due to arrive this week.
I'm glad to be rid of the Koyo, it's been crap right from the start, always needing to be plugged in to the Tender for anything longer than Two Days.
