Lurker now more! Got my Brutale 910R

Well I just wanted to say hello to the group since I finally got my baby. I was looking at a used bike to replace my hastily bought Harley, after a sabbatical from owning jap rockets I thought I could be happy with a cruiser.....yawwwnnn...slow, no clearance and well not really my age demographic.

So it was between a Tuono and a Brutale. After the kind folks at my local shop let me demo a Brute it was a wrap. That thing made me feel cooler then Burt Reynolds in a white tuxedo wearing a jet pack! I think I may have actually sprouted a '70s porn mustache as soon as I saddled the bugger.

I found an 07 about 2 hours away with 1,250 mi on the clock, Scotts Damper, Arrow dual carbon fiber slips and CRG lane splitter mirrors (all services done at my local shop). The guy bought it and never really used it (all the edge nubs are still on the tires), plus with a kid on the way had to get rid of it. At $9,500 I thought it was a steal, plus he tossed in a new Arai Corsair helmet, Alpine star gloves, a battery tender and a MV Agusta Brutale leather jacket. I upsold my bike for the same price and it ended up being an even trade

I have read a lot of stuff about these bikes and was worried about the snatchy throttle, electrical gremlins, over heating etc. Needless to say I was a little nervous. However, I never had single issue on the 2 hour drive from Costa Mesa to San Diego on the PCH and the 5 with stop and go traffic. As you can probably guess I am beyond happy with the purchase and have never experienced a bike that is so graceful and raw at the same time. It is like nothing I have ever ridden, kind of like riding a lion with his nuts in a vice.

Now I would like to garner some of your sage wisdom on the open questions I have about her.

Cosmetic / Maintenance:
1) I popped open the gas tank just to see my level (since he had filled her up before I picked her up) and noticed the gas looked slightly milky. Any thoughts? Is it b/c the gas is old or possibly the tank makes it look like this? I rode home for 2 hours and didn't experience any problems and then took a quick trip the next day. Should I siphon it out, run her dry or just not worry about it?

2) I have a slight stain on the grey leather pillion pad where it looks like someone set down a beverage can and it left a dark circle. Any advice on what I can use to get it out?

3) He had the passenger pegs removed when he bought the bike and is getting me all the OEM stuff this weekend. My question is can I attach the passenger pegs with my arrow exhaust? I know that the arrow has a brace attachment that connects to the back of the screw holes for the back peg set, so wasn't sure if this would be an issue or not. Anyone have a dual arrow with passenger pegs installed? Any extra pieces I need or standard hardware will work?

4) Looking to get a fender eliminator kit, saw one from Motivation for like 60 - 70 dollars. Can I mount the turn signals on it as well? For the lenses being in the states they are yellow can I buy just replacement covers or have to go with entirely new lights?

The fun stuff:
5) Wow the comments on this thing lifting up are quite true. I pulled the front wheel up multiple times driving around and have found where I need to tone back how hard I pull to keep her nose down. However, I am curious on what folks here use to clutch her up into a wheelie. I don't want to flip her on the first play since she has soo much grunt and power and clutching her up at the same RPMs as my old CBR will prob loop her. Has anyone hooligan-ed a 910R and knows what RPM she pulls up correctly at?

6) The back brake seems like a joke on this bike, is that normal? I feel like I can stomp on it and I have very very little response from it. Is there anyway to tighten up the bite? Especially with wheelies I don't want to roll it b/c the back has no balls to it

7) My front brembos I noticed screech a little bit when stopping at lower speeds. With 1,250 on the bike I can't think that the shoes are gone. Is this just b/c the bike has probably sat for so long w/o riding?


Thanks for anyone's input. I realize I just put a laundry list of questions out there, but I am beyond "geeking" out for this bike and just want to make sure I do everything right. I mean honestly, this motorcycle makes the rest of my bikes look like children's' toys with the raw power and subtle lines.


Also if anyone is interested in trading leather jackets let me know. The XL is too big for me at 5'11 160lbs. I am guessing I could probably get into a large or a medium. If anyone wants to swap out just PM me.

Congrads.. sounds like you got a great deal!! I am far from an expert on the mechanics but I can tell you that with my last couple of sport bikes the back brake is pretty useless. Use it in combination with the front for those emergency situations but I think 80% of your power is from the front.

As far as wheelie power... I have no problem with my 1078 in the first 3 gears with no clutching her up. Just my experience but I am sure you will get more advice from the other pros!!

welcome to the MV club!! I just came back from Indy Motogp and I can tell you I saw one MV all weekend and about a million Ducati's- I love them too but you are now in an elite club-

Regarding question 3 (passenger pegs), see pix hereunder lifted from one of our sponsors'site. Seems like the pegs fit with the Arrow carbon slip-on.

The clutch just makes the wheelie rise in a more controlled fashion. It goes up higher but at a slower rate than a power wheelie. Not sure on the rpms. I never looked you just blip it by sound. Font pullit in too much or you will loop it when you let it pop. My advice go to a big parking lot and practice clutching it up for a while before you do it on the street.

Thanks for the input folks!

Yeah the back brake just seemed so weak I wasn't sure if there was anything I can do with it. I normally always rely on the front, just wanted to make sure I had some power to bring the front down in case it came up too quick.

So it does appear I can get those pegs on, that is great news!

I plan on taking it really slow with clutching her up, already found an empty business park parking lot to use

Will make a big difference (unless you can find a station selling pure gasoline).

Yes you can...and Clear Alternatives makes the lenses...also, take the spacers out from the front turn lights (shorter bolts needed)...spacers are USA spec, looks much better when they are tucked in more like the rest of the world.

The rear brake will lock the wheel if you stand on it, juts doesn't have a lot of bite.

Hard compound pads are probably a bit glazed....try taking them out and cleaning with brake clean and scuff the surface with a little emery cloth. Also clean the discs and scuff them with a light ScotchBrite pad.

I guess that would also be the case for the Arrow ti cans?

Dual Arrow slip-ons require spacers for passenger peg mount as they are larger diameter then stock.

I used to be fast....now I just dream about it.

Thanks a lot everyone, really appreciate the help on this!

@esq'z me: I took a look at your bike and that is exactly what I want to do with my fender eliminator kit and turn signals. Did you have to drill holes to put your blinkers on your kit?

So when you took the huge alien stalks off your blinker you were able to just pick up a pair of smaller bolts to fit them? Do you happen to know the length you bought?

Rear signals bolt on to the fender eliminator, no drilling or other mods required. I did find a rubber grommet to help seal the hole where the wires pass through the tail section to help keep water thrown up by the tire out from the under seat area.
The front blinker bolts are just that much shorter then the spacers removed. I went to my friendly Ace hardware store and got some stainless bolts of an appropriate length there....piece of cake, really.
