Smile Lurker no more.......

Hello everyone -

I've been reading the forum now for three weeks or so; but now, I've gone and done it: picked up a low mileage '08 910R with a salvage title last week. Cleaned up the little cosmetic scuffs, got a minor service and checkup at my local, Munroe Motors in San Francisco. Now all I have to do is enjoy what has to be the coolest bike I've ever owned - and this is #67! The bike is bone stock for now, except for the mirrors; the stockers had to go after my first 60 mile backroad romp. Cute little CRG Arrows on the bar ends now........

This was a first for me, "taking a chance" on a salvaged bike. Welcome to the weird wonderful world of insurance company paranoia! My ride will always have a title with the Scarlet Letter of "salvage" on it, but I'm getting to own and ride a scoot I never thought I'd be able to afford..... and riding 'em is what it's about, eh?

Thanks for the welcome! I gained a lot of insight from this forum before I actually became a Brutale owner. I looked at an '04 750s; was surprised and amused by the bipolar power band.....! When I heard about the salvage 910r, I was tempted because of the well-documented low end power advantage, but put off by the whole unfamiliar thing surrounding the "wrecked vehicle" image. I pictured the classic low-side throw-down: planed off bar end, fork end, engine case, footrest, exhaust system etc etc. When I saw the bike I purchased, I was immediately suspicious (theft??????), because the damage to the right side was so minimal. I did a bunch of inquiring, starting with my local dealer; running the VIN totally reassured me re the legality, not to mention the superficiality of the accident damage. Seems that the insurance companies here in FantasyLand (CA...!) take one look at an exotic like the Brutale, hear the magic words "frame" and "forks" and "cases", and then totally freak out and total the bike. The lucky owner gets his settlement ('course, he WAS paying those usurious collision rates!), a perfectly usable bike gets put on the auction block as a "wreck", and if the fairy tale ending is selected, some lucky rider (me!) gets a chance to own a bike he only fantasized about. No wonder our insurance rates are so freakin' high! Everything I've learned from the CA DMV, CHP, and my local dealer seems to indicate that the salvage vehicle market is worth looking at, at least for "exotic" bikes here in California.
