Chain weirdness

Hey there... just wanting to check something out: Was out on a reasonable long ride yesterday, after going thru a particually boring patch roadworks gave it a handful of throttle thru a couple of gears.. got up to a reasonable pace in 2nd and suddenly it sounded like the chain had acually come off and the rear locked up, then as quick as that happened it was back to normal like nothing had happened. Pulled over up the road, hub was warm/hot but could still keep my my hand on it with no problem, chain looked fine, chain tension looked fine.

Could my chain have picked up a stone or something? Sure felt like that had happened and it was my first thought...

Any ideas?

checked your chain tension? or more importantly when was the last time you checked your rear hub?

Thanks for the reply!

Chain tension seems OK, I have attached a pic (sorry crappy iphone camera!). This is with no weight on the bike. Hub checked a month ago, new bearings and seals installed at the same time.

The chain looks way too tight in that picture!!!

And. yes, you could have picked up a stone, but you will likely see some witness marks on the sprocket and a link or two of the chain if that happened.

I used to be fast....now I just dream about it.

Thanks for that... I had thought that the center of the chain should be inline with the bottom of the chain guard?

EDIT: OK.. i was wrong... 9mm lower (pic attached now). I should just be able to use the chain tool to do this correct? Is it normal for the chain tension to change over the course of a couple of weeks?

Hi Simon,
Sounds like a stone/rogue bit of road-crap to me, if the chain had slipped you'd definitely know about it !!

Your chain felt fine 3 weeks ago and I didn't get any impression it was too tight....just your seat

It was in for something at the shop and was re-adjusted then. I think they have over tightened it... there is no way it could tighten that much over the course of a couple of weeks right? Should i get them to check the hub/bearings again?

I'd take it on your favourite run (Kai - Mai race track) and check your hub temp and feel on the bike....you've done that run so many times you'll know if it doesn't feel right.

errrrrr - hmmmm.....yes, I think you've accurately reflected momentum was not an issue

Chains don't get tighter with wear...unless they are kinking up in some links.

Better to be slightly loose rather than tight at all.

Rotate wheel and check chain slack at multiple points. 9 mm from bottom of guard to center line of the pins. You should not have to press on the chain to get that measurement, but you may want to push down and release and see where it lands. This, of course, with the bike on the paddock stand.

If it is more tight in certain spots then others the chain is kinking and may need replacement.

Well - the rear bearing is on its way out. And this is a whole new rear bearing set installed a month ago.

I have informed the shop that the bike is coming in to get my new spare set installed... this was there reply:

"Good old cheap parts aye..."

yea - it must be the bearings fault!!!... Could never be:
  • The right hand side rear wheel nut not being torqued up correctly, the split pin being nearly pulled out and the nut just about coming off after a big ride, OR
  • After that was fixed the chain not correctly tightened.
Nar - never could be one of those two things.
