The meaning of conflict

A couple of weeks ago my wife read my horoscope to me; it mentioned that around the 13th of the month I would learn the meaning of the word conflict. Normally I don't give a rats ass about stuff like that until Saturday- and Saturday night when she re-read it to me.

On Saturday the 13th we rode into the Chicago area to look for leathers. We also decided to go over to MCC (where I got my Brutale) in Villa Park to bullshit and drool on the toys. Kim rode her R1 and I was on my 910. When we rolled in to MCC, we saw a MV E-Z up canopy, 4 red Brutales and a bunch of people milling about. I figured that we just happened upon some MV get-together that I wasn't aware of. I thought ... cool.

The table under the canopy had video equipment on it and a few of the Brutales had cameras on them as well. The guys around the bikes were all speaking Italian. Now I knew something was up. I said hi and asked what was going on.

They introduced themselves and said that they were here to ride Brutales across the US on route 66- from Chicago to L.A. Wow how cool is that? One of the guys was Lorenzo Cocco, MV Agusta's exec general manager (second to Claudio)! Also there was Mark Mazzoli- everybody on this board has seen Mark in a Brutale video! The cameras were there because they were shooting the whole thing for Italian TV!

They pointed a video camera and started interviewing me ( while they were going over my Brutale with a fine tooth comb ) to discuss all the mods I've made.

Later on in the conversation as we're talking about their trip- they asked me to come with them!!!

OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes! Yes! Yes! I'll go!!!

Oh shit, I can't go. Fuck. I've got a bunch of stuff going on at work and I can't go. They said- Yes, come with us! I said- Fuck. No I can't. They said yes you can!

I said- Hmmm??? And I must have had that "What the F" look in my eyes 'cause the wifey said - if you go I'm going too. Fabio said (in a group of Italians there's always a Fabio) "You can't go with that bike (R1)." I said- we are at an MV dealer we could trade in the R1 and fix that. Then my wife smiled .. I didn't think she would say- "OK" .

Then sanity took over. Who would pay my mortgage after I lost my job? No, I couldn't go. Another loud "Fuck" came out of my mouth.

How many miles per day are you going to ride? 200-250. Damn, I can't take off two weeks to ride to LA and another 4 days to ride back. Especially now-too many high priority demands at work. Finally I had to tell them no. It was the hardest decision I've had to make in my life.

But just to mess with them- my wife & I went into the dealership and got a key to a Brutale. We came out and approached them- Kim waving the key high in the air. We said- We're Going! We just bought a Brutale! You should have seen the look on Fabio's face. Then we conceded and finally said no- we really couldn't go.

We consoled ourselves with a track day at Road America on Sunday.

Here's a link to Mark Mazzoli's blog. See route 66 day 1. Search for "carl". Also, there's a pick with Lorenzo, me, my wife and Mark.

Tell them I'll go!!! I live in LA but mabye I could do the return journey!!! Its funny that you mention this story because I just finished reading "The Long Way Around" a book about Ewan McGreggor and Charley Boorman and their trip from London to New York (the long way) on their BMW GS 1200.

It made me want to do some kind of road trip, but honestly I don't think my butt could handle more than about 100 miles. I'd have to get a new seat.

Great story! Thanks for sharing!

No, I didn't mention this site. I was too busy trying to figure out a way to ride the trip.
