Rear Hugger - Swing arm has no holes...

Hi guys,

I want to fit a rear hugger to my '04 750 but I notice that there are no holes pre drilled in the swing arm.

How easy is it to drill out the swing arm to allow a hugger to be installed? Or is this best avoided?

As a preliminary response, I've just looked at my 2007 F4 1000R and note that there seems to be only one screw hole in the top of the swing arm. Whilst I don't advocate drilling and tapping into a piece of engineered equipment, I suspect that is exactly what has been done for models after yours - subject to advice from more knowledgeable members, of which there are many. An upper mount goes directly onto the seat height adjuster, so that should be straight forward.

The early F4 swing arm was not pre-drilled for a hugger. Later models (and later Brutales), are.

When I bought my MV Corse hugger for my 910R it had instructions on drilling the holes on the bikes without holes already drilled.

I will look for those instructions, but not sure I can find them (it was a long while ago), but as I recall it said to remove the wheel, hold the hugger in position and mark the hole centers. Drill small pilot hole and follow with correct size for the well nuts.

The factory standard hugger does not come out over the swing arm replacing the upper chain guard as in nigelrb's photos. 3 holes are required, all concealed by the tire when mounted. Those holes were plugged with a plastic cap on models not equipped with a hugger (my 910R) as delivered from MV.

Ok guys Thanks. The huggers I am looking at are as per THIS link. Sounds like they are the same as the MV Course ones.

Yep...looks the same. I'll try and find my instructions (in a big box of stuff buried in storage) and will scan and post for you if I do.

If Calcifer's lucky, you might even find a hugger in said box!! (amazing how we accumulate goodies and then forget we have them!)

I had to drill my 05 1000S swingarm. Three M5 wellnuts iirc.

Iíve just done it on my B4.

Rear wheel off, put hugger in place and mark the holes with a pencil.

I then drilled a small 2mm pilot hole, then a 5mm one and finally a 10mm one. Ideally it should have been a 9.4mm hole so the well nuts were snug to fit.

I couldnít get the right drill bit. I did try 9mm on the first hole but it was too small. So I added a touch of glue to the wellnuts so they were held still when tightening up the bolts and compressing inside the swingarm.

Drilling isnít hard provided you have a decent drill and sharp drill bit. Only took a few secs for each hole and the swingarm is relatively thin.

Thanks for the info. glad to here the drilling isn't too difficult.! Is the swing arm painted or powder coated? mine looks like at some point it has had battery leak or similar and has a white mark near the front that I just cant get rid of so wondered about getting it stripped and re-coated. depending on the cost!!

I had my swingarm powder coated which was about $200.
