F3 800 Malfunction

Howdy all,

My 2013 F3 800 has developed a strange issue. While riding on the highway my neutral & side stand light will come on followed by a message on the bottom of the screen which reads "Malfunction".
This keeps happening around 30 minutes into each ride . The bike doesn't loose power and the gear indicator still reads the current gear I'm in.

Any one ever experience something similar or have any suggestions ?

Something similar happened to me at the track, around roughly 4000 rpm I noticed a slight drop in power, I looked down and saw malfunction on the dash. The bike continued to run and had power so I finished my session, after I was in pit I noticed my gear sensor wasn't working and assumed this was the issue.

Perhaps it's a connection and not a faulty sensor as I assumed? Any risk of running the bike like this? Parts take a while to arrive in Canada nowadays....

@MrTrogg I think there is a service bulletin about this... a search will reveal a thread or 2 with details.

I should have mentioned I've already had the gear position sensor replaced. I've got the 3 wire one not the two.

I suppose I'm more curious to know if running without gear position could cause any lasting damage, next track day is next weekend....

ECU fuel and ignition mapping is gear position dependent (I am pretty sure, maybe I'm wrong though)....so the bike may not perform quite as well. AND if the gear position sensor is also the Neutral sensor (switch) then you could have problems from loss of that signal to the ECU.

If it starts and runs then loss of Gear Position signal will probably not hurt anything...you just may experience poor performance.

Thank you for the information, she starts and runs so that's good. Off to the shop after the weekend!

I still keep getting the same "malfunction" on the dash however for the first time it's starting to indicate I'm in different gears. While travelling in fith the gear indicator will drop down to 3 then 4 then 5... Gear sensor is definitly problematic.

There's a service bulletin for the gear position sensor. It's SB 116. If a dealer is too far they can likely take your info and send you the parts to DIY. It's an easy fix.
