Clutch cable sleeve keeps breaking

I've got a problem where the clutch cable sleeve has broken twice on me where it goes across the engine mount. The cable itself is intact. Not sure if this is heat or vibration (or both)? Have others had this same problem? Clutch still works but you can feel notchiness/drag. I think I'm going to heat wrap the cable there so it blocks heat and reduces the vibration. I don't think I can route it differently unfortunately and the cable is only long enough so that at full left it has no extra room for movement.

Any thoughts and suggestions?

That sounds like improper routing from the manufacturer. I would not keep riding it with the clutch cable rubbing on the engine mount. It won't be much fun if your clutch cable breaks while riding.


Share some pictures, year and model to see if some other members can verify whether their bike has the same cable routing.

There really is only one way it can route. It doesn't rub on the engine mount but it rests on it. I think over time though vibration and heat causes an issue. Its routed just like in the manuals.

So I took a second look and compared pics of whats on new bikes... the only difference and it could be something is this:

Coming off the clutch area the bend section aims downwards from the factory. Mine was aiming upwards. So I turned it downwards and this allows the cable to not be in contact with the engine mount when steering is aiming ahead. If I lock and turn to the left it will contact still. But this may be all that is needed for added life.

Something else..... I cut into the cable and the metal parts are actually all fine. Its the black plastic that split... and this allows debris to enter and cause drag.

If you look at the manual it says to "route as far from manifold as possible". Not much that can be done however this shows that they understand heat is a big deal here. So it seems MV knows that its a heat issue.

I'll put some heat foil I think to keep that manifold heat off my new cable when it comes in.
