Looks like its time for number 5...

Apologies if this sounds like a disappointing rant.

Ran home to grab some homework in between classes and when I tried to start my bike I got the sound of nightmares, the sprag clack. Cranked and clacked three times before it turned over (hot start). Even more worrisome is that this is not only the 4th sprag the bike has had, but its also the new modified design. I guess, on a positive not, I was issue free for more than 2000 miles this time. Hopefully this was just a one time fluke. But, it's been taking longer to start recently and it finally made the sound; exactly whats happened the past 3 times. Maybe number 5 will last 2500 miles before it goes out...

I still say some bikes eat sprags faster than others and some seem to have no appetite for them at all.

I admire your patience though. Think I might have called it quits by now....

Jono is right some bikes have an appetite for sprags and others do not. Mine likes them, a lot, I am on number 5 now. Better battery fitted, and replaced the cables to and from battery, solenoid and starter for some high quality copper cables, that all seems to have helped.

But as fo a real cure, only time will tell,I had hoped that MV had sorted this, but it sounds dubious. Hope you get an extended warranty on replacement.

Personally, I have found that a better battery and upgraded cables has sorted that problem out.

Man that's gotta drive you nuts.
It does seem strange that some bikes tend to fire through sprags while others have absolutely no issues at all. My Drag RR is over 8000km+ without even a hint of an issue as are a few others on here.
Hope it's sorted soon for you.

Good thing it has a shorai in it. But I totally agree with you and the argument that some bikes go through sprags crazy fast.

It's not a battery thing, I'm on my 4th. The stock battery died long ago. Have a great battery now, and it never struggles to turn the motor over. If the starter always spins right, then it's NOT THE BATTERY...it's a crappy sprag design. I hope this re-designed one last at least a little longer.

Do something today that your future self will thank you for.

I've wondered before if the issue isn't so much the actual sprag as the bit that it fits into. Forgive my technical explanation. This is after I heard a tech say he'd taken dead ones out and the new one looked absolutely identical. If theres too much tolerance in the casting where the sprag fits that could lead to failure and explain why some bikes run fine on the original one and some just chew them up.

Who knows?

Anyone seen what the sprag fits into? I would imagine that it would be cast and then finish machined if theres any sort of contact.
