F3 800 First service...valve check????

Hey all

Quick question. My MV is in the dealer getting some electrical issues sorted under warranty and after asking the workshop manager told me that the first 1,000kms service is $575 and the reason its so expensive is that the valve clearances must be checked. Does this sound correct?

I have downloaded the workshop manual and it doesn't seem to list this as part of the first service. Is this maybe something that has been added to the initial service schedule recently?

Hi Pug,
A valve clearance check is not required until 7,500 miles, so your dealer is pulling your chain.
At 7,500 miles most bikes are found to be inside the tolerances allowed as well.

yeah thats what i thought it seems a bit strange. Unless he mistook me asking for a 10,000kms service but the bike is brand new with only 430kms on it.

I have never had a new bike before and had to go to approved dealers to get them serviced so its a bit of a pain.

Pug,
Anyone who is technically competent can service your bike, as long as they follow the service schedule and use MV genuine parts.

However to get things like map updates etc only a franchise MV dealer with the correct equipment can perform those things.

The first service is as listed in the schedule engine oil and filter, plus a general check,nothing fancy.

I would think $575 will be avg cost in Aus for first service, doubt if that includes valve clearances cos if it did that would cost maybe 2-3 times the quote you've been given. Italian bikes generally not cheap to service, enjoy the ride as that's the payback.

MV bikes are no more expensive to service than any three or four cylinder bike, labour rates vary, my preferred UK dealer costs around £60 an hour which is pretty average.

Filters and oil are the same so in general running an Italian bike is no different than running anything comparable.

As I do all my own servicing and buying oil in bulk etc, things can work out fairly reasonable.

Valve inspection (note that is NOT adjustment) was a part of first service in years past but has been determined unnecessary and deleted in recent years. This is true of Japanese bikes and most Euro bikes.

Some older models with rocker arm screw/lock nut adjusters still require inspection (although they are rarely in need of adjustment).
Inspection is not so time consuming. Adjustment is when it gets pricey.

I was also thinking that no way can AU$575 include a valve check, it sound a about average towards expensive for the first service but I might be wrong, I'd question him about it for sure.
What's the labour charge in Aus these days at a bike shop, I think the car guys charge 90-110 per hour.
Service schedule should also be in your owners manual mate.

Had my Dragster's first service done and valve check wasn't part of it, only cost 90 euros in Spain. Been to Oz a fair few times and seen how pricey Perth was but over 500 bucks still sounds a lot to me.

My B3 800 also did not need any valve check. Costs for 1000 km service was just over 100 euro.

What a beast of a motorcycle!
It growls and rages and flies across the tarmac like a wild animal that has escaped the confinement of a cage and after merely waiting restlessly until the release, will not endure being locked up ever again.
