R312 not starting after getting hot - Datatool alarm fitter

Hi guys,

my F4 just got hot for the first time (first nice few days of weather here in the UK). It was up to 110C when I switched it off back at home.

A couple of minutes later I wanted to check the oil level so I pressed the alarm button to turn the (auto-arming) alarm back off. Except, it hadn't armed. The red LED was illuminated but not flashing.

I could use the key to switch the ignition on, but the fuel pump wouldn't prime nor would the starter motor spin.

About 20 minutes later, the alarm started working again, but the pump still wasn't priming.

About 20 minutes after that, the bike started working as normal.


No big deal this time, but that would have been a right pain in the arse if it had happened somewhere else.

Was it the alarm? (Datatool S4 Red, can't see anything in the manual that describes this situation)

Was it the bike?

Both?

If the figment is anything like how mine, then the alarm isolates several circuits, including the ignition which also powers the pump. (You can prove this by turning the key on when the kill switch is off.

Datatools alarms seem notorious for going bad after a few years on MVs because they get fitted under the seat where they get very hot. The fact that your alarm seemed to misbehave would indicate it is the likely culprit.

Unfortunately, i need the datatool for insurance purposes. I am going to put some tin foil above the silencers to see if that will keep the datatool/ecu area cooler.

Today (hotter still) i just switched the engine off at the lights when I needed to and made sure to ride plenty quick when I could; there were no problems. We get maybe 1-2 weeks of these days here so no big problem.

It might be worth you replacing the 9v battery inside the alarm. I think mine started playing up a little when it went flat. (Normally it won't as it takes power from the bike's battery, but if that's ever gone flat then it'll have used its own.)

The smart solution would be to get an approved fitter to replace your alarm with a new one, if you require it for insurance. But obviously that's not exactly cheap.
