General relay?

Hi all,

Had a bit of trouble starting the 312 yesterday. The ignition went through its cycle, pushed start button and heard a click. I initially thought battery but it has been on the optimate (i know that doesnt mean its good) but tested and all fine.

I took the fairings off and the click appeared to be coming from the black relay on the left of the bracket (as you look at bike) which holds the starter solenoid. I took the relay off, cleaned, put back on and all works.Tried starting again today and no problems. Its a black relay. Is it a starter relay? or just a 'general' relay?

And the big question is.......

Does anyone know where i can get a spare in the UK just in case mine is going bad?

Cheers,

Al

I got a spare Alan.

Check the obvious..battery terminals.

Put a volt meter across the battery and observe the voltage when you engage the starter. If it collapses then you have a cell down and the battery is knackered.

The click is normal. It is the solenoid operating the heavy duty contactors.

Anyway..as your bike is working now....you know there is a spare one here for you should you ever need it.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the reply, you are a legend! I have just been out for a ride and all seems well but it is nice to know you have one if needed.....

Are they an MV part or is it something i can get from an auto parts shop?

Thanks again mate.

Al. There are other starter solenoids that will work..I bought a Ymaha one recently that looked identical..and indeed it is fine electrically but it is orientated at 90 deg to the oe MV one and so wont sit in the rubber carrier correctly. I am sure the MV one is common to other bikes maybe Ducati or Aprillia.
I'm a bit of a hoarder with the relays and it is always great to be able to keep another MV on the road if it hits a glitch and not have the owner go through the nightmare of waiting for MV---MotoGb...dealer to supply...a veritable trail of tears !
Anytime u need a bit of help feel free..I'm no great expert but I'll help ya all I can.

A relay's a relay. Only diff is how many amps it's rated for. You can get a 30 amp automotive four pole relay at Radio Shack for around 8 bucks that will work just as well as the $$$$$ MV one. What I use in my HD Cafe and that starter is a starter.

I got mine. Boy do I ever got mine.
