First Track Day

Learn from my mistake. I attended my first track day this past weekend at California Speedway in Fontana with Fast Track Riders. First let me say that Fast Track Riders (www.fasttrackriders.com) provided a fantastic track day and I would recommend them highly to anyone interested in getting out on the track. I signed up for the novice school which involves classroom time between your level one sessions. The problem I encountered was really nobody's fault but my own. Don't let this happen to you.

I've had my matte black '06 F4-1000 for about four months now and knew I was going to have to have my tires changed at the track. I was told that you can save some significant money by doing this at the track as tires are a lot less expensive there. My plan was to ride my first three 20 minute sessions on my existing tires and them changed between sessions. All the reputable tire manufacturers are there and will change them out for you within 15 minutes. Mounted and balanced, I was due to save over $150.00.

It never occurred to me that nobody at the track would have the required 55mm socket required to take the back wheel off. I ended up having to park my bike for the second two thirds of the day. Luckily, I had a friend there with a new R6 and he let me use his bike for the rest of the day. No it wasn't the same but at least I got to ride the track and didn't have to go home. DO NOT GO TO THE TRACK WITHOUT A 55mm SOCKET! The biggest socket Pirelli, Michelin, or Dunlop had was a 47mm for the Ducatis.

Learn from my mistake.

There's one more thing too, it's not guaranteed that the tire vendor will have cones that fit the MV rear wheel to balance it.

Get your tires changed at the dealer or by someone you know has the right stuff beforehand. Ducati/Honda/Triumph stuff doesn't usually fit. I've had mine to the track a ton of times and I never get the tires done at the track. Too much hassle with the MV.

Buy yourself either a 55mm or 2 3/16" socket just in case someone at the track does have the right balance setup.

Tell us more about your track day experience... were you nervous? was it as fun as you thought it would be? Was the class helpful? did you feel like you were a better rider afterwards?

Aprilia,

Put it like this... I spent Monday shopping for an enclosed trailer, new Dainese track suit, a used F4-1000, and that 55mm socket. Seriously, it was insane and I'm hooked.

I'm told that the whole set up at Fontana is a real treat. You have your own garage bay, air conditioned classroom, great instructors, and it's really well organized with that outfit (Fast Track Riders). I don't have anything to compare them to but it was better and more fun than I even thought. They'll be there again on the 13th and 14th of October I think (might be 14th and 15th) if you're interested.

I was nervous and don't think I swallowed for the first 2 laps as there wasn't a bit of moisture to be found in my mouth. I got comfortable pretty quickly though and I was more concerned with dumping my bike than getting hurt. You're so much safer on the track than the street and you can really see what your bike is capable of doing. They break the class down to three students with each instructor. You wear a colored vest so your intructor can better find you on the track and work with him after your sessions. You do 20 mins. in the classroom and then take what you learned out for 20 mins. on the track. This goes on all day and yes, I know I improved and got more confident.

David! Maybe i can make it out there but we'll have to see.

R^C- when i got there i got wind that there was not only the f4s on the track, but also a matte black F4. However, we ended up wondering if it was a mixup since we didn't see it for the rest of the morning. Looks like the sighting was for real! Did you see all of us out there? Stop by and say hi

Hey, Bill

Mighty glad to see you here!!!

It was a hard toss between Pahrump and Fontucky but Fontucky won hand down (ie., Wives can peruse the Ontario Mills mall while we enjoy the track. ) You should join us at Cal Speedway AMA layout (Think LV Speedway X10).

I will give you a call sometime this week.
