Unhappy big problem

Is there anyone who could possibly help? I am the lucky owner of an F4 750 1999. I just recently
tried to fit a new battery, and some how managed to reverse the polarity. needless to say that the thing has died. Has anyone managed to be as stupid? Please could you let me know what happened, and the problems it caused. I have someone looking at it at the moment, and he says it keeps blowing one of the fuses. I am so desperate to get it sorted out! please, please, any suggestions other than cutting my wrists!
