Radiator Removal/Installation

Going to take out the Rad/Fan group on my Tambo. Other than following the shop manual does anyone who has done this have any tips/tricks to make it easier/safer? I don't want to ding the fins/core, or anything else for that matter, and it's kinda tight in there.

I got mine. Boy do I ever got mine.

HINT : Don't take the radiators off when there are HOT!!!! hahaha

Get you hands on some stainless steel clamps as the original ones are crap and requires a special tool to reuse them.

Its only 1 bolt that hold the radiator in place. Taking off the front tyre makes it easier to get to the radiator.

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast!!

I reused the original clamps, they work just fine, and are much lighter than stainless clamps.

You can pry the original clamps off with a small screwdriver. The bugger is getting them back on. The secret is a special tool available in Europe made by Facom. You won't find one here in the US. However, necessity being the mother of invention, you can use a CV joint boot clamp plier available anywhere for about $3.

It isn't the hose clamps I'm concerned with but rather the actual removal of the rad assy itself. It appears to be mounted at the top with two grommets and bolts and at the bottom with a bracket with a grommet into which a post slides. Once those three things are free the book says to drop the left side down and then slide it out. Is it that simple or has anyone found a different way to do it minimizing potential contact between the assy and the rest of the bike?

just curious...why are you removing it.....there are other ways to save weight besides conversion to air cooled.

Because it doesn't cool well enough. My plan is to modify a radiator from a Honda Civic and mount it on the left side (I'll have to either modify the fairing or remove it entirely) and put four small fans on the outside which will blow through as opposed to pulling through. I am also considering fabbing up a ram scoop to direct more air through the radiator.
