Agostini named Grand Marshal of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days featuring MV Agusta
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and Cagiva USA have announced that Giacomo Agostini will be the "Grand Marshal" of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days 2006, to be held July 28-30 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Agostini, who was inducted into the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999, is considered the greatest Grand Prix rider of all time. In just 17 years he won 15 world Grand Prix titles, 12 Isle of Man TT crowns, and 122 Grand Prix events. He brought unprecedented recognition to the Daytona 200 when he won the race in 1974.

As motorcycling's first world superstar, Agostini was linked throughout his career with MV Agusta, which will be the "Featured Marque" at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days 2006. Founded in 1945, Meccanica Verghera Agusta is known for its sophisticated, elegant Italian design and attention to performance, as well as for a long string of world championships. MV Agusta will be celebrated at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days 2006 with an exhibit of classic motorcycles and memorabilia, with the cooperation of Cagiva USA, North America's exclusive importer of the MV Agusta brand.

"Having Giacomo Agostini preside over this event will be a great experience, not only for our dedicated MV owners and fans, but for all motorcyclists," notes Lawrence Ferracci, Cagiva USA's Director of Operations. "Ago is a true champion and an icon in the history of motorcycling."

As in previous years, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days will kick off a ten-day celebration of motorcycling at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, concluding with the AMA Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire the following weekend, August 4-6.

In 2006, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days will be held two weeks later than its usual mid-July weekend. Other sporting events during the summer of 2006 prompted what is expected to be a one-year departure from the traditional dates.

AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, which attracts an estimated 40,000 enthusiasts each year, benefits the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, and in 2006 will include the all-brands AMA Swapmeet, bike shows, a full slate of American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) racing, and other features to be announced in the coming months.

HA! I have Ago's autograph! :D I got it at a motorstore in the Netherlands. He asked me if I owned a MV. I told him I didn't, because I'm just 17 years old :) :) He gave me his autograph after that !

I too was lucky enough to see the great man together with Phil Read and a certain SMB Hailwood ride the fire engines to victory. Young Mr Rossi is a wonderful talent but we remember the old masters with great fondness. :)
