Also the 2011 RR got these tubes in it's airbox :jsm: . So that is "normal".
These tube are about 2" high, the airbox itself only is app. 4,4" high. And the velocity stacks stick in a lot........
What is the use of these tubes? Some kind of Helmholtz resonators?
Do they improve hp and torque or do theys cut them only to bring noise down to the latest requirements?
I'm thinking of eliminating them to hear the Diva screeeeeeam :f4:.
All models prior to the 990/1090 did not have these tubes........
All those 'bits' are there for a reason - either to smooth the power/torque curve or for noise reduction. Unless you have lots of dyno time I would be reticent to play around with something that has had years of development.

Good call chopping the airbox up. I really can not see the 675 having those things in there as the induction noise is like nothing else. So maybe they are baffles to divert any loose screws or rivnuts from going down the stacks. Lol.
There is no better sound than an MV on the gas.:f4:
In an interview of a German Motorcycle journal Castiglione told that their R&D department consists of 27 people - app. half of them are technicians :jsm: . That's all......
I got an used B5 airbox through ebay where I will cut off these weird tubes. Will let you know.....
I think what Noel is trying to say is, hell, I don't know, perhaps it is for noise tuning...my first thought....then all those pressure waves started to bounce around in my head.....
Watching the racing at Cronk y Voddy (IoM TT) one year and I'm pretty sure the exhaust pressure waves from the passing Britten knocked me cuppa over! :jsm: What a beast! opcorn:
Got my used 990R airbox - it has the same weird tubes in it :jsm: . Production date of the plastic parts is 2009 - so all B5 should have this design of the inner airbox.......
BUT why did not one B5 owner notice it :stickpoke????
Here are some pics of the disassembled airbox.
I really cannot immagine how this assymetric design shall work .
Also took a pic of the 2013 RR intake - it should have larger diameters and shorter stacks than 2010-11 RR models and the R models.
What do you think about the Italian design of the intake tubes??
I made contact to a well known engine tuner here in Germany. That guy did many Moto2 engines.........
I sent him the pics of the B4 airbox with these weird tubes inside.
His comment:
He never saw anything like this in any other bike he did. It would not create any power at any revs. The only explanation could be noise issues concerning legal regulations.
I did mount my tube-free airbox without snorkels and could not find any bad thing about it. But that thing now screeeeeeams :yo:.
It looks like a setup based purely on engineering airflow, where based on the shape of the chamber, location of the air in and air out it would equalize the air pressure and flow to each throttle body intake.
Probably designed by very smart people who are practically stupid.
These inner tubes are very high inside the airbox and there's only very small space between the trumpets. Cannot imagine how this should work at higher rpms as the trumpets are covered a lot......
Would like to see a newer F4 airbox from inside.....
