Owned my F4 750 for two weeks, now she's dead.

Hi guys,

A bit more of an ignoble first post than I was hoping for. I bought a 2000 F4 750 in March from a posting in the forum classifieds. I had her shipped to Hawaii, put only about 150 miles on her in a week and a half, hadn't even gotten plates for her.

Yesterday (Yes, Friday the 13th) I made it about 8 miles down the highway before she made a massive and very nasty rattling noise. Pulled the clutch, killed the motor, and pulled over on the side of the highway.

I like to buy bargains, this was one, so it's a bit my own fault. Usually I get away with it, but at some point luck catches up. She was running pretty damn well too beforehand.

Attached is the aftermath. Dropped valve=Dead MV :bawling:

Anyone have a recommendation for a source for a new used motor? How much does a 750 motor weigh (I have to get one to Hawaii)? Also, any particular reason anyone can think of for such a catastrophic failure so unexpectedly?

It was an awesome two weeks though...

Shouldn't be a wellnut, I just replaced them with epoxied rivet nuts per the thread here. I'm pretty curious as to what the top end of the motor looks like once it gets torn apart.

The valve dropped at the lowest stress point I could imagine, doing about 55mph, cruising in traffic. No WOT, no load, no coming back from a quick run, nada.

I did hear a little valve tick beforehand, enough to think of doing an adjustment, but not enough to be a worry. What I've read has said that these aren't exactly quiet engines, and compared to my Ducati, she was smooth as a sewing machine.

I gotta admit though, from the quality of some of the work I've seen on the bike, it could certainly be an inexperienced mechanic issue.

Looks like CAG is going to hook it up with a replacement lump. Time to do a bit of tool shopping and brush up on my MV disassembly manual.

Anything besides a standard mechanic's set that'd come in handy tearing her down?
