QD Exhaust and EPA (NSW)

Hey guys!

Today I got pull over from the RBT.
Even tho my licence was cleared, that I didn't drink a drop of alchool, and the policer officer told me "all good"... One of the other officers wrote down my number plate and I'm now expecting to get a letter from the EPA very soon.

I have a Dragster RR with a QD Exhaust, no chicane >:) and it's really noisy. Anyone else already had trouble with the EPA in New South Wales. I live in Sydney and it's going to be a first for me. I'm thinking of either putting the chicane or replace with the stock exhaust at least for the noise check (not sure what should I do). Also I have no idea if there is any fee that I'll have to pay for this?

Thanks in advance for your advice,

Maxime

Sometimes your number will get recorded without any further action taken providing they don't come across you again in a short period.. (could be lucky)

If you get sent for inspection it will be at a registered workshop and the cost for motorcycles is just over $40

Noise Testing and Anti-Tampering Inspection Scheme | NSW EPA

good luck!

I read the thread title and thought of the EPA here in the U.S., and in my mind I had a rant of epic proportions ready to fly. Was ready to even call President Trump and give someone in his office there a piece of my mind.

Whew...glad I don't have to do any of that now. :)

OP, did you leave the DB killers in on your QD? Here in the U.S. I tossed mine in the trash right after it was installed and she sounds awesome. Yeah I just had to rub that it in a little.

I'm in Sydney NSW,

If your sure the 2nd cop said "I'm sending a notice to the EPA for mandatory noise test" then start to worry.
If that's the case I would put the standard exhaust back on for the test, be aware that they may photograph the bike and if your pulled over again for noise with a different exhaust soon after then they may fine you for "tampering" with the noise reduction system. (this is anecdotal)
You don't have to have an OEM muffler but the bike must comply with the noise laws.
Also find the noise sticker on the bike which will state the noise level and test RPM, probably is higher than the blanket 95dB? just to add to the confusion.

The 2nd 'better' option is you may get a letter from the EPA that your vehicle was reported for excess noise and if they receive a 2nd report within a certain time frame then you will be sent to a testing center.
This happened to me about 6 months ago on my ride to work DRZ400SM which has a yoshimura full exhaust system which is not that loud reported by a member of the public, must have been some wowser who hates bikes.
Meanwhile hundreds of Harleys get around with painfully loud exhausts and nothing seems to happen to them?

Loud pipes cost rights.....

The Harley guys are getting it too. They caused most of the attention so they should.

And hang on Spark....it's coming your way.

The legislators that write the laws don't care for obnoxiously loud bikes disturbing their peace. Ask Trump how he feels about that open pipe Harley roaring by in the middle of his back swing. He isn't on your side.

We brought this on ourselves by letting those open pipe "loud pipes save lives" fools get away with it so long.

Don't get me wrong, I like a nice throaty exhaust sound as well, but there is such a thing as TOO loud.

Funny that this topic has reared its head...again.

Yesterday I am riding along on my Brutale 1090RR. I am on a highway cruising at 70 mph, full face helmet, ear plugs. I sense something is following closely just as I hear the blast of a get-the-hell-out-of-my-way ambulance horn. The unit was behind me with sirens-a-blaring and I could not hear it over the wind noise.

I don't know what physics would allow someone in a cage to hear the rearward facing noise from an exhaust no matter how loud...unless the bike was directly in front of you.

I remember seeing a video on YouTube about this. The mic was in a car, windows up with the "loud pipes" behind it and you could hear it but I wouldn't call it loud or attention getting at all. The bike was up next to and then passed the car before it was noticeably loud. To me, a little too late when the cager has already gone into your lane when you are in his blind and deaf spot although he will hear your bike hitting his car.

Hi there,

I have the HP Corse with the baffles pulled out as well. Haven't become cop bait with the noise.

Bear in mind if the cops pull you for an RBT that they cannot hold you until the EPA arrives. They are required to administer the breath test as soon as practicable. Just an FYI.

Yes the noise police (EPA) can be a problem. They really need to find something better to do with their lives. The Hardly Movingsons with their screaming eagle slash cuts seem to be immune to the EPA.

I don't have the stationary noise test sticker, it's not on my bike as far as I can see, unless it has a secret location somewhere.

I reckon fit the old exhaust once you get the notice, get it tested - the system will show you have passed.

Refit QD - if stopped again - rant about you having passed the testy already. They are not going to save pictures of your bike as tested.

I wouldn't worry about it. I got pulled over late last year on the Old Pac by an officer that claimed I was speeding after he did a U-turn and sped up to follow me before pulling me over and claiming he would be using his dash cam footage to get me from point to point speeding. He told me I would be getting my fine in the mail. Six months later I still have no fine. They love waiving their power around and making threats of fines.

Unless he sent you plate straight away he has probably forgot or couldn't be bothered at the end of his shift.
