Sprag Clutch

Hi All - I'm looking for some advice.

I've had a trouble free F3 675 for a few years now and am considering upgrading to an F3 800. I'm getting mixed reports on whether the Sprag Clutch issues are resolved on the newer models? I thought they were but recently spoke to a guy who has bought a new 800 4 months ago and the Sprag Clutch went (along with a heap of other problems).

Can anyone advise if this is still an issue?

I only seem to hear problems about the 800, I would have thought the 675 used the same sprag clutch?

Any other advise would be appreciated!

It would be nice if you had searched a bit...

There is this thread:
Aftermarket Sprag clutch.Interested?

Amazing effort by mitchy "the hub man" and an engineer of his, that finally provided a complete answer to the matter.
Read post #97.

"The MV sprag is a bad design and is too small for the job.
Upgrading the sprag assembly would require a larger unit to be made but is not possible due to limited space"

I particularly enjoyed this part:

"Because a 3 cylinder motor shuts down in various positions unlike a 4 cylinder motor which normally stops in the same postion, the 3 cylinder will stop BTDC or ATDC.The sprag will bite in and work better on a compression stroke if that makes sense. This is why 4 cylinder motors do not suffer the same failures."

So while MV tries to compensate through material science/design advances(because creating the required space to redesign properly would dictate a major redesign of components -- financially/time stressing) it is my understanding that the problem still persists to a degree.

Interesting read!

So the 675 and 800 both have the same clutch? If so, maybe the fact I ave a Lithium Iron battery may be why I've never had a problem?

As members of the forum suggested for some time, mitchy's effort confirmed that a weak/low battery amplifies/accelerates the inherent design problem.

My sprag warranty repair was just approved and parts arrived at the dealer (B3 800rr bought Nov 15). Will see how the new one goes.

Would I buy the bike again - HELL YES. Nothing else comes close.

Purchased the RC in January, there were signs of starting problems after a short period, latest version fitted under warranty, now covered over 6000 miles and has since started first time every time.

Got my RC800 in June, done over 4000 miles and after suspected symptoms of Sprag issues around 3,000 miles it was replaced by my dealer Bennetts ASAP without any further issues.
I have upgraded to MVs Lithuim battery which they were selling at a reduced price.£100.
I also only start my bike by pressing the start button first then pulling the clutch lever slowly until it bites and starts.
Dont know if this really helps but ive got into my system and automatically do this everytime.

Would i upgrade if i was you /
without a doubt, love mine and awesome bikes

The TSB is just that. It covers the models it lists and suggests a repair. It is not related to warranty.

On the application of the sprag issue, I believe it is all three cylinder 800 cc models up through '15.
